Lyrics
[Verse 1] You raced me down the sandy lane With scraped-up knees and shirts stained green The afternoon was wide and gold We climbed the palms behind the old yard gate [Chorus] Up the coconut trees we went One hand reaching, one hand bent You laughed below, i called your name And every summer felt the same [Verse 2] We tucked the young nuts in our sacks Then took the long way home again Auntie waved from her porch chair While warm wind combed the island air [Chorus] Up the coconut trees we went One hand reaching, one hand bent You laughed below, i called your name And every summer felt the same [Bridge] Now when the late sun turns the leaves I see those little shadows climb Your voice still finds me through the years As clear as then, as close as mine [Final chorus] Up the coconut trees we went One hand reaching, one hand bent You laughed below, i called your name And every summer feels the same [Outro] That sunny afternoon stays near My brothers, sisters, all right here
