Lyrics
[Verse 1] I reached the village just before the rain With dust on my shoes and a tune in my brain You waved me over by the tamarind tree And made a little room on the bench for me [Chorus] So i shared you a song, you gave me a rhyme We traded our stories and forgot the time Your voices rose warm through the green hillside air A stranger came walking; a friend left from there [Verse 2] Auntie brought mangoes, the children drew near Old joseph kept time with a palm on his knee You sang of the river that bends by the mill I learned every word as the evening grew still [Chorus] So i shared you a song, you gave me a rhyme We traded our stories and forgot the time Your voices rose warm through the green hillside air A stranger came walking; a friend left from there [Bridge] The mountain held gold where the last sun had gone The cooking fires scented the path all along No one asked whose tune it had been at the start By the final refrain, it belonged to each heart [Final chorus] So we shared one song, we passed it around From the old wooden bench to the edge of the town Your voices rose warm through the green hillside air A stranger came walking; a friend left from there [Outro] I carry that refrain wherever i roam A piece of your welcome that travels me home
