Crash Bandicoot: the marsupial who sold a PlayStation

Why did Sony launch its first PlayStation behind a grinning orange marsupial? In 1996 a small California studio called Naughty Dog answered with a wombat-turned-bandicoot, a camera pointed down a corridor, and a great many crates.
