Lyrics
[Verse 1] By the mango stall at half past noon, You set your case beneath the awning. A little crowd gathers, shoulder to shoulder, While miss lila turns the plantains slowly. [Chorus] Play us a road we haven’t known, Tell us what the far winds showed. From harbor steps to mountain lanes, You carry many worlds in your refrain. [Verse 2] You crossed the blue to port of spain, Slept where the fishing boats come in. Learned a greeting from a baker’s son, And shared a meal before the day was done. [Chorus] Play us a road we haven’t known, Tell us what the far winds showed. From harbor steps to mountain lanes, You carry many worlds in your refrain. [Bridge] A market girl claps time beside you, An old man names the island tune. Your stories pass from hand to hand, Like bright fruit traded in the afternoon. [Verse 3] You tell of hills wrapped up in cloud, Of painted doors and evening crowds. Then thank the square and pack your strings, Leaving one more tale for everything. [Chorus] Play us a road we haven’t known, Tell us what the far winds showed. From harbor steps to mountain lanes, You carry many worlds in your refrain. [Outro] The market settles, warm and slow, But down the lane your last notes go.
